Use your downtime for good, level up and share a unique and special experience with others

Get involved

The Students’ Union’s Volunteering service provides quality opportunities for students to volunteer in Tower Hamlets and across London, giving them the opportunity for new experiences, developing skills and to make a difference. With a range of different opportunities available with a variety of voluntary, charitable and not-for-profit organisations there is something to suit all interests and time commitments. Have a browse through our website and find something which appeals to you!

To get started, follow our guide below to find out how you can get involved and find out about the support and rewards that are available to you as a community volunteer.

Create a profile and you will then be able to browse hundreds of volunteering opportunities across London. You will also receive our weekly Students' Union Volunteering newsletter, featuring opportunities you can get involved with.

If you aren’t sure about what volunteering opportunities you are interested in then get in contact with the volunteering team and we'll help you get started.

All of the opportunities that we advertise should not leave you out-of-pocket, if you are volunteering with a charity they should cover how you claim expenses in your induction. For those taking part in Give Volunteering a Go or volunteering groups then you need to complete an expense claim form and return it to the Students' Union Hub reception or BLSA reception along with all original receipts. For TFL travel, log in to your TFL account and print your journey history. Find out more by reading our Expenses Policy.

Give Volunteering a Go

Join a group of other Queen Mary students and choose from a selection of one-off opportunities to try out volunteering. You don’t have to have any previous experience and you can take part in as many (or as little) as you like!

Volunteering Groups

Volunteering Groups are student-led projects that run activities in the local community. You can volunteer alongside like-minded students by signing up to volunteer with an existing group or even start your own!

Earn volunteering hours awards

You can log the community volunteering hours that you do with our charity partners, Give Volunteering a Go opportunities and volunteering done through volunteering groups. These will count towards volunteering hours awards.

Bronze = 25 Hours
Silver = 50 Hours
Gold = 100 Hours

Please note that any hours accumulated between 1 August and 31 July will be valid and hours cannot be rolled over from one academic year to another.

This short video shows you how to log your hours and record your skill development. Make sure you view it in full screen and HD. Once you have logged your hours and they have been verified by a member of the volunteering team, you will be able to download your certificate from your profile.

Log your hours
Volunteering and your employability

Volunteering is a great way to develop skills, networks and interests ready for your professional life after graduation. You can track the skills you develop through your volunteering activities on your volunteer profile, this is a useful way to create a log ready for those applications that will come along later down the line.

Also, anyone who achieves a Gold volunteering hours award will have this added to their Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR) for future employers to see.

The Volunteering, RAG and Sustainability Awards take place every year in March. Make sure to nominate yourself and your friends to recognise all your hard work.
