Statement regarding the closure of Westfield Nursery

Find out more about the university's proposed closure of Westfield Nursery and how you can join the campaign and make your voice heard.

We have recently learnt that the University has decided to permanently close Westfield Nursery at short notice and without appropriate consultation. This will hugely impact our students lives, as well as our staff and local community users.

The Students’ Union was not consulted about the closure, and we are disappointed by the abrupt approach taken on this matter. The Students’ Union exists to bridge the gap between the university’s students and its leadership. We cannot do this effectively if there is a lack of basic transparency on key issues such as this.

A university aspiring to be ‘the most inclusive of its kind’ would not rush through a decision like this without speaking to affected users of the service. Closure of this essential service may force some of our students to reduce, postpone or even withdraw from their studies altogether.

Students and staff have already organised a petition to oppose the closure, please sign it to show your support and share to raise awareness of the closure.

It is likely that a motion will also go to the Annual Student Meeting (ASM) on the 12th of July. Whether as Vice-President Welfare now, or as your President in coming weeks, I will ensure that your voices are heard on the closure. If a motion to oppose the closure is proposed at the ASM, I will support it.

Our university works better when there is a collegiate approach on sensitive matters such as this and we believe that there can be a solution that works for all. We are currently liaising with students affected and continue to raise the issue with the University.

If you are personally affected by the nursery closure, please feel free to contact me at su-vpwelfare@qmul.ac.uk.

From your Vice-President Welfare,
Tahmid Khan
