On Thursday 24th March, Hollywood glamour came to the Students’ Union for the Societies and Student Media Awards. Held in the Old Library at Whitechapel, the Awards celebrated the hard work and achievements of the Union’s diverse societies and student media outlets, with a wide range of award categories.

Guests were treated to a bubbly drinks reception upon arrival and entertained with music from pianist and QMUL student Matt Mahmoudi. The awards ceremony was then opened by Peter McOwan, Vice Principal of Public Engagement and Student Enterprise, followed by the presentation of awards by our Executive Officers, Societies Officer Yasir Yeahia and our Student Media Officer Chierol Lai. Labour Society won Society of the Year and free student newspaper The Print won Student Media Outlet of the Year.

Speaking about the award, Oliver Davis, President of Labour Society, commented:

“The Students’ Union have been consistently fantastic - they have laid on staff for us, facilitated our events at short notice, encouraged our crazier schemes, and been flexible and supportive but also trusted us to get on with it. Winning the award was quite an emotional experience for all of us, we basically stormed the stage! Our members have worked insanely hard - running over 130 events this year, giving out over 40,000 leaflets on campus, knocking on thousands of doors and travelling the length and breadth of the country. Most of what we do is pretty unglamorous, but we do it because we believe in it, and I’m just so proud of their passion and dedication.”

Megan Gurney, Managing Editor of The Print, also said:

“It was great to see all the work done by the talented people I’ve been surrounded by recognised, and to share that with all the other societies and media outlets. So many groups have worked together over the past year to achieve some amazing things, and it was great to celebrate that. I think I speak for everyone when I say that being involved in student media has been pretty ace. We’ve all really bonded and are sad to be leaving, but we’re also excited to see it all continue to grow after we’ve gone!”

We would like to congratulate all the winners, those shortlisted and all our student group leaders who have led their groups this year! See below for full award listings:
