The people of Pakistan are currently facing unprecedented devastation due to floods as a direct result of the current climate emergency. Our thoughts are with all those affected and with the Pakistani community as a whole. Queen Mary Students’ Union expresses solidarity with the people of Pakistan experiencing untold suffering and the loss of many lives.
Many people may be unaware but the scale of this humanitarian crisis is unprecedented. As a result of heavy rainfall from monsoon rains and melting glaciers, more than 1/3rd of Pakistan is currently under water. This has led to the destruction of nearly 300,000 homes, the loss of 1,000 lives - with the death toll increasing daily - and the displacement of around 33 million people.
We are now seeing in real time the tragic effects of climate change and the impact it has on millions of people across the region and surrounding countries. All over the world, extreme weather events are happening more frequently, and putting more and more people in danger.
We understand that this is an ongoing situation, a distressing and uncertain time for many students who are worried about family, friends, and loved ones in and around Pakistan. The Student’s Union is here to support you, so please reach out if you have questions or concerns.
