A Guide To... Mile End

Mile End is a residential hub with a community vibe surrounded by green spaces. A place for quietness, whilst still being in close proximity to the city, there is no better location to be to experience all that London has to offer.

Our Spaces

Still getting settled in and finding your feet on campus and the local area? We've got you covered! FYI, this guide will be extremely helpful in introducing you to the amazing area around university. You may even want to bookmark it for a later date. You’ll probably refer back to it throughout the year.

Mile End is a residential hub with a community vibe surrounded by green spaces. A place for quietness, whilst still being in close proximity to the city, there is no better location to be to experience all that London has to offer.

We’re sure you’ll get to know the local area more and find your own favourite spots, but this guide will introduce you to all the handy things you need to know during your first few months.

Tube stations: Stepney Green (District and Hammersmith & City Lines) / Mile End (Central, District and Hammersmith & City Lines)

Top attractions:

Green spaces

We’re lucky to be surrounded by amazing green spaces throughout the capital. Find yourself in Mile End Park or Victoria Park, perfect for hanging out on a sunny day and just a stone's throw away from campus. Alternatively, visit Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park. Named one of the magnificent seven, this nature reserve is filled with wildflower meadows and woodland.

Mile End Climbing Wall

Located in Mile End Park, Mile End Wall offers climbers the chance to challenge themselves with several different climbing walls with difficulties ranging from complete novice through to professionals. Try your hand at bouldering, rope and lead climbing in a relaxed environment.

Stepney City Farm

If you prefer the quiet life, Stepney City Farm is a reminder of life outside the city. With different cute animals to look at they also offer arts and crafts activities and a farmers' market at the weekend.

Genesis

An amazing local independent cinema showing a range of films to satisfy every film lover. With events and festivals as well as the hottest releases, tickets at Genesis start at as little as £1 too! Did you find them at the Welcome Fair during Freshers’?

Roman Road

Once home to famous East London Cockneys and jellied eels, Roman Road has a rich history and is a great place to grab a bite to eat or shop. Buy some of the best fruit and veg here and the market on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday is not to be missed!

Regent’s Canal

A stroll up Regent’s Canal is a scenic route and a must for anyone. Head East and find yourself at the iconic Olympic Park or walk west to Broadway Market (with tasty street food at the weekend) and beyond! You can walk all the way to Kings Cross if you feel so inclined.

Useful stuff:

Supermarkets – We have Village Shop and Union Shop on campus for you to buy groceries on site. Looking for a bigger supermarket for your weekly shop? There is an Asda down the road just past Stepney Green Station and a bigger Tesco if you’re based near Mile End. We even have an oriental supermarket about 10-minute walk away too.

Banks – There are a number of ATMs near the campus, the closest being across the road at Sainsbury’s local. The closest bank branches are a 20-minute walk away at Whitechapel.

Post Office – The closest is 10-minute walk away from campus, around the corner from Mile End Station.

Pharmacies – The NHS has a very handy “find your nearest pharmacy” page on their website - https://www.nhs.uk/service-search/pharmacy/find-a-pharmacy
