LGBTQ+ History Month

Welcome to LGBTQ+ History Month at Queen Mary Students' Union! This month invites everyone to think about LGBTQIA+ communities with a nuanced approach, whilst incorporating the voices of LGBTQIA+ people, and striving to seek meaningful societal change. The month serves not only as a celebration of the progress made by the LGBTQIA+ community but also as an important moment for reflection on the diverse experiences within it. In the UK, it takes place in February each year, and has been a poignant part of the calendar since its first observance in 2005.

The theme this year is ‘Activism and Social Change’, which reflects both the origins of the political Pride movement as well as the contemporary challenges for some of the most marginalised in our community, including trans, non-binary and gender-nonconforming people, black and brown queer people, and disabled queer people. The month also presents an opportunity to encourage allyship. Organisations and individuals are urged to engage as proactive allies, not just during February, but year-round.

We have engaged with various students, departments, and external organisations to create events and campaigns throughout this month. You are invited to join us in the first ever student-led trans pride, Tower Hamlets Trans Pride. It will also the first ever trans pride event in the East End. More information can be found on Instagram: @towerhamletstranspride. Other key events throughout the month include the 10th Anniversary of BL LGBT+ Drag Extravaganza, and the QM Queer Ball will be returning for its 2nd year! We will also be raising the Intersex-Inclusive Progress Pride flag outside of Queens’ building, to fly throughout the month. There are also other workshops, talks, and events planned throughout the month. All our events are open to both members of the community and allies, and we will strive to make each event as accessible as we can.

We can't wait to see you there!
