Legal Philosophy Book Club

About

Welcome to the Legal Philosophy Book Club (LPBC)!

Our mission is to explore and discuss influential works of legal philosophy that have significantly shaped the legal landscape we navigate today. In our engaging sessions, we collectively delve into classic texts like J.S. Mill's 'On Liberty' and Thomas Hobbes' 'Leviathan.' However, we also place a strong emphasis on exploring diverse perspectives, including those presented by authors like Simone de Beauvoir in 'The Second Sex' and Frantz Fanon in 'The Wretched of the Earth.'

To ensure a comprehensive understanding, we've structured our reading process with a progress plan for each book. Our fortnightly meetings provide an opportunity for members to share thoughts and reflections on the ideas presented in the text so far. We believe that fostering a regular dialogue enriches our collective understanding of these seminal works.

At LPBC, we are intentional about spotlighting authors from diverse backgrounds. We recognize that traditional academic perspectives, especially in the legal context, have often been dominated by the voices of privileged straight white men. Our club aims to challenge this status quo and broaden the scope of our discussions. By focusing on authors who offer unique viewpoints, we strive to provide our members with a more nuanced and well-rounded understanding of how the legal system was shaped and how it impacts individuals from minority perspectives.

Our first meeting, open to all students, is on the 30.09 at Blomeley Room 2, starting at 16.30.
