Rare diseases are more than often overlooked within medical education. This gap in knowledge means that many rare diseases go undiagnosed, leading to a great deal of uncertainty for patients who go years without an explanation for their symptoms. This medical uncertainty surrounding rare diseases can isolate patients and collectively create a significant burden on the health service. While we recognize that closing the gap is nearly impossible due to the complexity of over 8,000 known rare conditions, each influenced by a range of genetic and non-genetic factors that make diagnosis challenging. Our aim is to raise awareness among medical students and foster discussions about addressing the challenges of rare diseases.Teaching future doctors more about rare diseases is important to make them familiar with such conditions that they may face in the future and be better equipped.
We are committed to promoting education and awareness of Rare diseases at Barts and beyond.
