1 in 17 people in the UK will be affected by a rare disease in their lifetime, with 3.5 million people currently affected by a rare disease in the UK and 30 million in Europe. Students for Rare Diseases aims to raise awareness amongst the student community about the prevalence of rare diseases and their impact on patients. The society hopes to bring students together to discuss how rare diseases are relevant to everyday medicine and to prepare and educate students on the management of patients affected by rare diseases. By educating future healthcare professionals we can increase early recognition and diagnosis of rare diseases, and end the struggles of many families that are still in search of a diagnosis.
