Welcome to Barts and the London Oral and Maxillofacial Society (BLOMS)!
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) is an exciting surgical specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of patients with disease affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck including trauma, oncology, orthognathic and deformity including cleft lip and palate. It is unique in that Registrars and Consultants require dual qualification in both Dentistry and Medicine.
Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry offers an accelerated 3 year Medicine course for those who are dentally qualified wishing to pursue a career in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery or Oral Medicine.
We welcome both Dental and Medical students to our society who have an interest in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Our society is dedicated to providing opportunities to learn more about this field of surgery and also provide support to those pursuing their second degree at Barts and the London.
Aims & Objectives
1) Increase awareness of the OMFS specialty and the unique training pathway
2) Provide information and support to students considering a career in OMFS, including how to gain experience in the field, career pathways, advice for applying for 2nd degree
3) To provide information on different aspects of head and neck surgery, both theory and running practical skills sessions to help prepare students for a career working in surgery. (e.g suturing sessions, head and neck examinations, incision and drainage, plating workshops)
